jammin' in boracay

It was my first trip to this so-called island paradise. As a traveller one wonders why I wouldn't put it as a priority destination. My reason is very simple-I hate crowded beaches! But as fate would have it, this year's Singles For Christ International Leaders Conference was held there. So I got a backpack and went with 4,000 plus other delegates from around the world.

The conference was it's usual wild self. Well wildness is different in the SFC context. There were inspirational talks, sharings, sports activities, contests and all night partying-the SFC way.

One thing that was highlighted is this Oikos (environmental ministry of Couples For Christ) project focusing on Boracay's waste management. It really scared me that this beautiful place would simply crumble if the waste coming from the influx of tourists is not taken cared of at once. Construction is a boom for so many years now, both for small time resort owners and mega projects such as the 10 hectare hotel with 1 hectare swimming pool that Shangri-la is supposed to be building within the next two years. Can you imagine the waste that will be generated by these establishments?

After the conference, I got to see and feel the island. There's a different feel to it despite the crowd. The people are friendly, the food is excellent, the culture is laid back and of course the beach is nothing I have seen. To make it short, I was bitten by it's charm, unexpectedly. And yes I want to go back. Not next year, probably in a month or so. That's how fast the addiction is growing in me.
